Description

[1] Turn right out of the Centre into Greenhill Road. Take the second road on the right – Birkdale Street. Walk along this road, across Esmond Road and then cross Shirley Road into Shaftesbury Road.

[2] The first road on your right is Alms Hill Road. Walk along this road and when you come to a new housing development turn left into Appleton Street and then right into Cardinal Street.

[3] This will bring you to Smedley Lane, opposite a ruined church, of which only the tower with its spire remains. Cross the road and turn left.

Old gravestones can be seen through the railings, and the churchyard is now a haven for wildlife.

[4] Turn right at the end of the church railings and walk along a footpath between the back of the church and the playground of Temple Primary School. The footpath takes you to the Museum of Transport.

(A) The Museum has one of Britain’s largest collections of restored trams, buses and coaches, and is open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and Bank Holidays, and every day during the school summer holidays.

[5] Take the passageway at the back of the museum, between the museum building and the playground of Temple Primary School, and follow this footpath along Sonning Walk, down three broad steps, then straight ahead up three shallow steps, across the turning circles at the top of two short streets (Hawkeshead and Lecester). Go straight ahead through a barrier and turn left at the end of the passage.

[6] Walk between concrete fences and down a slope to emerge on Smedley Lane. Turn right, cross the road, and enter Smedley Fields through a gate in an ornate wrought iron fence.

[7] Walk straight ahead past a disused building and some blue containers, and across the grass behind the football pitch, making for a children’s playground opposite. Leave the fields with the playground on your right, onto Cardinal Street.

[8] Turn right along Cardinal Street, and follow this road as it winds gently downhill, past Shaftesbury and Greenford Road, until you reach Woodlands Road opposite the metro line and Abraham Moss College.

[9] Turn left and walk gently uphill for about 10 minutes until you reach the traffic lights, and then turn left into Greenhill Road back to the Centre.
