The 169 bus goes pass the Library, and you can join the walk outside Crowcroft park if you use the 192 bus route.

Description

[1] Come out of the Library and turn right, and walk along Barlow Road, past Chapel Street School and Park. Just before the Blue Bell Pub, where the crash barrier ends cross the road. In front are steps up into (A) Green Bank Fields, either go up the steps and turn right, or walk along the pavement, passed the bus stop to a second entrance. Either way a path goes from the second entrance into the middle of the playing fields. Follow this, go left and then right to follow the path right across the playing fields come out onto Manor road, cross over and go right until you can enter Green Bank Park.

[2] Go through the park and come out onto Baslow Avenue, which leads to Guildford Road, go right along it until you can go left into Cranmere Avenue. This leads to Matthews Lane. Cross straight over to the entrance to (B) Crowcroft Park. This is a new area of land which was added to the old park, although separate from it. It was an old clay pit, and then a rubbish tip, but in recent years was covered with soil, and is turning into a wild area.

[3] There are a lot of paths across it, but most can be wet and muddy. However the path which goes straight across parallel to the schools, is just ok for pushchairs. It can be avoided by going round Mount Road in front and Longsight Road to the side of the schools. The path comes out onto Longsight Road. Turn left and walk down the pavement beside the wilderness area. Just as the road begins to bend right, and immediately before some bungalows, a path goes off on the left. This is called Park Bank Lane and leads pleasantly through to Bickerdike Avenue. Notice the old terraced houses here were built with a mixture of red and yellow brick.

[4] As Bickerdike Avenue curves left, you can cut through a ginnel, to the old Crowcroft Park, but you may prefer to walk on to where it joins Northmoor Road and turn back left along it for 30 yards, and cross over and go into the Park. Walk straight into the park and go to the rockery. Notice the information board which points out among other things that the park had at one time 14 tennis courts, and was one of the best used parks in Manchester. You will also see your route marked out on the plan. Go towards the children’s play area, and then round the outside of the bowling green, to reach the orchard area (it also has picnic tables). The orchard area is nicely set out with willow work.

[5] From here follow the path beside Stockport Road, to the main gates, and go out onto Stockport Road. Turn left along the road and go passed the Jain Community Centre and Netto, until you reach Matthews Lane. On the corner, is what used to be the Half Way Pub, and opposite on Stockport Road is the Farmers Arms, a reminder that (C) Levenshulme was once good farmland.

[6] The quickest way back to the Library is to continue along Stockport Road until Cromwell Grove is reached, and then go down it to the Library. However the pavement is rather narrow, so with children or pushchairs, turn left into Matthews Road, cross over and go down Deepcar Street, in front of new bungalows, to Mayford Road. Go left along it and then right into Portville Road, and then into Charlton Road. At the end of Charlton Road go left and follow Barlow Road round back to the Library.
