Busses from Howlands Park and Ride stop 100m in New Elvet

Description

[1] From the pavement in front of Old Shire Hall, cross the road and turn right along the pavement away from the City Centre.

[2] At the end of the houses, turn left down the road into the University Cricket Ground, but before you reach the house, turn right on a path which rises up a slope and then runs parallel with Green Lane.  Continue past Durham Cricket Club on your left, and turn right onto the tarmac road at the far side of a hedge, and turn left along it.

[3] After 20m, fork right on a track and follow this to the River Wear, and turn right and follow the river bank until you reach Maiden Castle Sports Ground.

[4] Go through a gate on your left and cross the footbridge over the river, and turn left and follow the river bank back downstream, passing over the recently built Kingfisher Bridge which crosses Old Durham Beck.  Continue along the riverbank passing Durham Rowing Club on the opposite bank, and passing through the bottom of Pelaw Wood.

[5] Continue along the riverbank below Hild and Bede colleges passing some university boathouses, and reaching Baths Bridge which is the end of the Regatta rowing course.  Continue on the same bank under New Elvet Bridge and passing between Brown's Boathouse and the car park.

[6] At Old Elvet Bridge, take the road under the bridge which rises to join Old Elvet, and turn left to Saddler Street and then turn right along this to Durham's Market Place.

[7] Bear left in the Market place past Tesco and go down Silver Street.

[8] As the road bears right across Framwellgate Bridge, turn left and descend a flight of steps to the river footpath and follow this past the Fulling Mill Museum to Prebends Bridge.

[9] Turn left up the road through the Water Gate and proceed along the South Bailey until opposite the east end of the cathedral.

[10] Turn right down Bow Lane and cross Kingsgate Bridge.

[11] On reaching the road go straight across by the traffic island and turn left and then right into Elvet Crescent.

[12] At the Court Inn, turn right and then left through the area in front of Zen restauraunt and follow a path through to the walk starting point in Old Elvet.

Please note that as of Jan 2014, the riverside path between (4) and (5) is still closed due to a landslip and is likely to remain so for many months more. There is an alternative path which involves climbing high up into the wood (steps). That's why I have only given 3 stars
