This inner city walk has a number of busy roads, please take care when crossing these and use pedestrian crossings where possible
[1] From the start turn left along Cossington Street.
[2] Cross straight over Belgrave Road and bear slightly right onto Loughborough Road, continue for a short distance
[3] Take the first Left along Bruin Street. and continue to the end, passing Abbey Community Primary School and Vinola Mills on the right
[4] Turn Right onto Ross Walk and cross over where safe to do so.
[5] Where the road bears right take the path to the left, just before the sea cadets base TS Tiger, and follow this path to the River Soar.
[6] At the River, just before the bridge, follow the path to the Left.
[7] Cross the canal via the footbridge just beyond Belgrave Lock and walk along the towpath with the canal on your left.
(A) Belgrave Lock is the start (or finish!) of the Leicester Line of the Grand Union Canal which runs from London to Birmingham and gave Leicester access to markets in major cities such as Birmingham, London and Manchester. At he start one of the most important commodities carried was coal from the East Midlands coalfields. The canal, opened in the early 19th century, avoids the weirs and races of the River Soar.
The towpath is quite narrow and in places is a little uneven. Take care and walk in single file to avoid the edge of the towpath. There are some overhanging brambles in places which should be avoided.
[8] Immediately before Abbey Park Road bridge turn right up the slope to join the road.
[9] Turn left onto Abbey Park Road.and continue to the Belgrave Flyover
[10] Cross Belgrave Road under the flyover and then turn left to continue towards Sainsburys.
[11] Turn right onto the footpath leading to the supermarket.
[12] Turn left at the front of Sainsburys and follow the building around to the right until reaching the Peepul Centre car park
(B) Sainsburys and the Peepul Centre stand on the site of Belgrave Station. This terminus opened on January 1st 1883 and closed 9th September 1962. Trains went to Peterborough and Grantham with summer specials to Skegness and Mablethorpe
[13] Turn left onto the footpath and continue forward
[14] Continue straight along Allington Street
[15] When the road turns sharply Right go straight on to the path to enter Cossington Recreation Ground.
[16] At the path junction turn Right.
[17] Follow the path to the right when one joins it on the left.
[18] At the path junction take the Left hand path, continue along this path and bear left by the ball park.
[19] Turn Right along Rendell Road.
[20] At Cossington Street turn Right to return to the start point.
