Description

A short circular walk taking you along the River Soar.

[1] Upon leaving Fosse Neighbourhood Centre, turn left along Mantle Road. Cross over the junction with Battenberg Road, continuing straight on.

[2] At the next junction with Paget Road, turn left and continue on to the T junction with Tudor Road. You will see the entrance to Rally Park directly opposite.

[3] Cross over Tudor Road and enter Rally Park, heading straight on along the made path.

Tudor Road is heavily parked, so take care checking for traffic when crossing this street.

[4] After a short distance, take the first path on the right that heads along the edge of the park. The houses and gardens of Tudor Road border the path to your right.

[5] Eventually the path forks; take the left hand fork and continue along to the river. You will see the BMX cycle track to your left.

[6] As you approach the River Soar you will see a bridge crossing over the river. Just before the bridge turn right, taking the path that runs along the riverside, keeping the River Soar to your left.

[7] Continue straight onthe upper path ignoring any turn offs until you reach a quiet road in an industrial area. Continue along this road for approximately 100 metres until you reach the first turn on the right. The turn is a dead end of the road, but there is a footpath that continues beyond the tarmac. Take this footpath and keep straight on until you reach the main path back in Rally park.

[8] As you reach the path turn right keeping the bordering houses on your left. At this junction you will see a short piece of train track along with an old signal.

(A) The Rally was once part of the historic Leicester and Swannington Railway, the very first to be opened in the Midlands linking the coalfields of Bagworth, Nailstone, Ibstock, Ellistown, Desford and Snibston to Leicester. Robert Stevenson was contracted as chief engineer. This original signal standing beside a piece of track is left as a reminder of the Park’s historic past and recalls the days of steam when Leicester was amongst the first to utilise the new mode of transport.

[9] Continue straight along the path ignoring all turn offs, keeping the houses to the left, until you reach the Tudor Road entrance with the play area where you first entered the park. Turn left here and emerge onto Tudor Road.

[10] Cross over Tudor Road heading straight over onto Paget Road.

[11] Take the first right off Paget Road onto Mantle Road retracing your steps. Cross over Battenberg Road heading straight over the junction. Continue along and you will see Fosse Neighbourhood Centre on your right.
