[1] Turn right into High Street and then left at Church in direction of Niton. After 100 metres turn right into Bannock Road. Turn left into gap before bungalow No.45, and immediately right over stile, cross the field and follow footpath down hedge line on the right of the field towards stream at bottom. Exit over stile, turn right and follow path by stream and on reaching lane turn left. Where the lane bears right at Stockbridge Manor, turn left up into field and continue ahead along fenced path on right. Cross the stile in the corner and walk in same direction to reach a signpost. Turn left, crossing the corner of the same field and pass over a ditch and stile in the hedge ahead. Walk up the field beside the hedge, then right at the house to reach the road at Bierley.
[2] Follow the road to the right ignoring the first footpath on left, and take the second footpath, opposite “Kilnside”. Descend diagonally right to cross a stile and footbridge in far corner. Continue through the field ahead with a fence and lake on right, and over a stile to follow the path which bears left on a grassy ledge through trees and across another footbridge and then through a gate. Turn right over a concrete bridge, following the path between trees. At the top, take the right track and after 25 metres turn sharp left on the track to a gate ahead. Ascend with the fence on your right, and at the brow of this, take a short climb straight on through a gully to a gate, keeping the fence on your right. Immediately after gate turn left up the bridleway and pass through a gate into a field.
Then continue past a house on your right, climbing on along bridleway NT78, cross a farm lane and then towards the top of the climb, bear left keeping the stonewall on your right (ignoring a concrete path). At the gates, turn right into the National Trust property, climbing through a copse, whilst keeping the stone wall/fence on the right to ridge of St Catherine’s Down. At the ridge notice (A) Hoy Monument to your right, turn left along the Down to follow a well trodden path until reaching the bridlegate. Bear right here and ascend the hill with fence on your left to (B) St. Catherine’s Oratory.
[3] Bear right past Oratory, downhill to a stile (opposite direction to trig point). Once over the stile, bear left downhill to a signpost and stile above the main road. Cross the stile, walk down the steps and cross the road into Blackgang Viewpoint car park. Turn right down a path signposted 'Coastal Path' and continue on through the field to meet the main road by a roundabout. Follow the left-hand side of the road (A3055) towards Chale, ignoring a minor road to left. Opposite a bungalow on the right, turn left onto the bridleway and on reaching a lane, turn right to rejoin the A3055 road at Chale.
Turn left here along the main road. It is advisable to use the wider, right-hand verge as soon as possible. At the entrance to “White Mouse Inn”, cross the road and go over stile opposite to join the Coastal Footpath. Follow this path around edge of the field with the ditch on your left, then cross footbridge, continuing towards coast, (with the ditch now on your right). Cross the ditch at the next footbridge, by a warning sign, and follow obvious path along cliff edge. Take care and supervise children along this high crumbling cliff edge.
The Coastal Footpath turns inland before Whale Chine, so turn right at a marker post and cross the field to the main road.
[4] Cross this road and turn right keeping along the left-hand verge, to turn left into Southdown Lane after 300 metres. When the lane bends left, keep ahead uphill on a narrow path (Footpath C22 to Chale), along the prominent ridge of Southdown. At the power lines ignore a path going right, and bear slightly left descending through bushes to a bridlegate and down to the road.Turn right, and at the T-junction go ahead along the private drive of Pyle Cottage. Keeping to the left, pass through a small gate into gardens of Pyle Manor.
Maintain your direction to follow the path across the lawn and through a large gate on the far side, into Windmill Copse. Continue on a well-used footpath through the trees, ignoring a footpath off to right through the deer enclosure, and eventually wind left down onto the boardwalk through a marshy area. On leaving the trees, turn right, following the edge of the copse to a stile in the corner. Follow the fenced path to another stile, and continue out to the lane. Turn left, and when hedge on the right ends, turn right and walk on the left of the ditch to reach a track. Follow this track to the right towards Corve Farm. Turn right between the buildings, and then keep to the right of all other buildings. At the lane turn right and then immediately turn left by a signpost, with a hedge and ditch on your left, shortly turning left again over a footbridge to keep beside the hedge and ditch in the direction of the lake. Where the hedge ends, continue on along the line of the ditch, bearing slightly right to a stile.
[5] Cross the stile and walk ahead over a boardwalk to cross a field, and at the waymarks turn right to continue round the same field, beside the fence, to another stile ahead. Follow the path as it passes through a thicket. Cross the footbridge and continue on, to reach a track. Turn left here, and after about half a mile at track crossroads, turn right onto the bridleway, which leads to Bucks Farm. Just before some farm buildings, fork left onto a wide track which by-passes the farm. When this rejoins the farm track, go left to the road. Turn left along the road for about 250 metres, and at a signpost turn right onto Kingston bridleway. Keep on track (towards the transmitter mast) passing a copse on the left, crossing a field ahead, and climbing through scrub area to a gate on the skyline, which leads into a field.
[6] Bear right to walk round the edge of this long field with the hedge on your left. On reaching a track, turn left on Bridleway G12, and at the end, go through the gate by the National Trust 'Chillerton Down' sign. Bear left past a cattle pen, ignoring tracks climbing off to the right to continue straight ahead with the hedge on your left. Follow the path in this general direction around the foot of Northcourt Down, with hedge, or fence constantly on your left, ignoring a track off to the left by an electricity pole. Pass through two bridle gates to descend into the valley (where the fence finally angles left down towards New Barn Farm) and turn right on the track climbing towards a gate and hedge line. At the hedge line and gate, bear left to walk with the hedge/fence on your right towards a further gate. Turn left after going through two gates and go along the left side of two fields. Finally, at edge of village, pass through the bridle gate and turn left down the path between two gardens to the road. Turn left along the road into Shorwell village, passing the Post Office on the right and Church on the left before reaching the Crown public house.
