Getting there

Parking is available at the Market Square of Crook. You can access this route also via public transport. From Durham to Crook, take the bus Arriva 49A or from Bishop Auckland to Crook take the bus Arriva 1B or X1 or Go North East OK1.

 

Description

[1] Starting from the Market Square, turn left and cross South Street. Follow the road until you reach Church Street.

[2] Cross over Church Street and follow the path around the church. Keep walking to the dropped curb, then cross the road and follow it down to the right.

[3] The road, North Terrace, will bear right. Keep walking straight into Mill Street and follow this road. You will pass an Inn on your left hand side.

[4] Walk over the bridge and walk up Church Hill. Continue walking up the steep path until you reach St. Cuthbert's Church.

[5] Turn right at St Cuthbert's Church gates. Walk past the church on your left, then keep walking forwards through the graveyard and field. At the end of the field go through the metal gates and continue forwards past garages on your left and houses on your right.

[6] At the end of the road turn left to follow the public footpath. 

[7] Just after the metal arch follow the path as it bears right and you will pass graveyards on your right. At the end of the path ‘Crook Golf Club’ is situated to the left of you.

[8] When reaching the road, cross over and turn right and continue walking down the path with the road to the right of you and the fields on your left. 

[9] Follow the road until the end of it. Cross the road in front of you (Job's Hill Bank) and go straight over into Rumby Hill Lane.

[10] Keep walking until you reach the public footpath sign on your right. Follow the footpath and keep walking downhill through the trees and join the path to the right of you past the houses on the right.

[11] Walk down ‘Woodland Court’ until the end when you reach 'Ennerdale Drive'. Turn left down 'Ennerdale Drive' until it bears right into Blencathra Crescent. Follow the road until the end.

[12] Cross over the road in front of you and walk over a small grassy area. Bear right walking past a dog waste bin on your right. 

[13] Follow the path around and down a decline and make sure to keep to the main path. As you are walking you will see the beck to your left and go over a bridge. 

[14] Turn left immediately after the bridge and and follow the path uphill bearing right to the next path junction.    

[15] Turn left and follow the path through a hedge and up to the roundabout at the head of Beechburn Park estate.

[16] Go downhill on the estate road and take the first turning right. After 50 yards turn left down a signed tarmac footpath between fences. 

[17] Where this joins an unpaved track, bear right along the track, continuing straight ahead where it joins Hollowdene until the main road is reached.

[18] Turn right into the main road and follow it as it bears right. Cross the road  to get into the entrance of the Castle Close industrial estate. Follow this road until you reach South End Villas.

[19] Turn right and then left to go round the South End Villas.

[20] At the end you will reach New Road again. Turn left and follow the road until you reach the Market Square.

Crook has a famous amateur football team, Crook Town F.C.. Crook Town has won the FA Amateur Cup five times, most recently beating Enfield F.C. in 1964, before the cup was abolished in 1974.
