Route Summary A circular walk through Grange Lane, by the side of Laund Clough and returning via Oak Hill Park and its mansion.

Getting there

By car:  There is a car park at the rear of the Pals Centre and also across the street at The New Era Centre.

By Bus:  There is a bus stop on Paradise Street, or from the bus station up Church Street to the mini roundabout and then turn right onto Paradise Street.

By Train: The station is next to the Tesco Superstore almost opposite Paradise Street.


 

Description

[1] From the Paradise Street entrance cross the road at the pelican crossing and then turn right and walk to the end of the street.

[2] Turn left down Church Street then take the first right on to Grange Lane.

[3] Follow the lane as it winds round.  After passing the Training  Centre carefully cross the road and continue up past the rear of the Police Station to its junction with Manchester Road.

[4] Double back a short way on Manchester Road and cross this busy road at the traffic island.  Walk up Manchester Road until you reach the traffic island near the Old Toll House on the right.  Cross at the island and continue till you reach the gate of Oak Hill Park.

[5] Enter Oak Hill Park through the gate and take the right hand path down through the park passing Oak Hill Mansion, now a retirement home, until you arrive at the bottom gate.  Leave through the gate and continue down the road and take the second left onto Christ Church Street.  To extend the walk you can take the path to your right and follow it up the steep hill and around the bowling green and back down to the bottom gate.

[6] Walk along the street into Christ Church Square, turn right and walk down Hill Street to the end.

[7] Turn left onto Wellington Street and follow to the end taking care crossing the road.

[8] |Follow the road round to the right and turn left at the mini roundabout back onto Paradise Street  and the Pals Centre.

POI information

A. Laund Clough  is a popular local wood for nearby residents, mainly used by dog walkers and children playing. Mature trees such as beech and ash share ground with regenerating elm, beech, ash and sycamore.

B. The Old Toll Bar House now being used as an electrical substation

C. Oak Hill Mansion was built in 1793 by Thomas Hargreaves, owner of the Broad Oak Print Works. The mansion and its gardens remained in the Hargreaves family until its acquisition by Accrington Corporation. The last private owners of Oak Hill were Reginald Hargreaves and his wife Alice Liddell who was the inspiration for Alice in the Alice in Wonderland book .

D. Christ Church Square, one of the few old squares left in the town.
