Getting there

Centrebus service 100, Leicester-Melton Mowbray, goes along Main Street Gaddesby and past the Cheney Arms at the junction with Rearsby Lane and Nether End.

Description

[1] From the pub, turn right along Rearsby Lane for about 50 metres. Take the footpath to the left, opposite Chapel Lane on the right, and go along an avenue of trees.

[2] Cross a wooden bridge across a stream, where the footpath divides. Take the left fork. The path, marked by yellow-topped posts, goes across a (not-very-well-insulated) electric fence (take care!) and a small bridge across a stream.

[3] In the next field, two paths cross. At the junction take the left-hand fork. Continue in a roughly straight line across several fields.

[4] Approaching some farm buildings, aim for the yellow-topped post at the left of the buildings. Go over the stile and follow the winding track past farm buildings. The track becomes a lane with houses on the left. Continue into the village of Barsby and arrive at the junction of The Lane and Main Street. Head straight along Main Street. Village Hall Green, on the left, has some benches and is a pleasant place to take a break.

[5] Continue along Main Street and come to a road junction, signposted Ashby Folville to the left and South Croxton to the right. Go straight across into Baggrave End and follow the road. At Holmefield House, near the end of Baggrave End, is yellow-topped marker indicating a path bearing right. It doesn't matter whether you take this or continue to the end of the road and follow the marker there, up some steps. Either way, the paths soon meet again. After they have done so, go straight on.

[6] When the path divides at a stile, go straight on rather than right. Continue down a slope with some poplar trees on the left. After the path has swung to the right, go over a stile on the left and up a slope ahead. Over the brow of the hill, bear slightly left as the path goes downhill. In the dip, cross the bridge and go up the slope ahead in the next field. You should soon come to a path crossing. (Depending on the state of the field, the junction may not be obvious. If you reach another bridge, you have gone too far and will have to retrace your steps.

[7] At the path crossroads take the path to the left. Eventually this reaches an unpaved road. Bear right on this road, follow it to the left and continue until reaching a bridge and, soon afterwards, a paved road.

[8] Turn left in to the road, which becomes Folville Street, and follow it into the village of Ashby Folville. Continue along the road to house number 25 on the right, just before the red phone box. (If you reach the church, you have gone too far.)

[9] Enter the drive of number 25, keeping to the left, and you will see the footpath marker on the left. Follow the path up the side of the house, go over a stile and bear left over a bridge. Over the next stile, turn left and continue till meeting a road.

[10] Take the path slightly to the right across the road, signposted 'Leicestershire Round ... Gaddesby...'. The narrow, fenced path soon opens out into a field. Go straight across this field, and several more, following the yellow-topped posts. (If the yellow markers disappear from view and - because of the state of the fields - the path isn't clear, the spire of St Luke's Church in Gaddesby is a good general guide.)

[11] Just before reaching St Luke's Church, the path divides. Turn left and leave the Leicestershire Round, with the church on your right.

[12] By the entrance to the church, turn left into Church Lane. At the T-junction, turn right. This is Ashby Road, later becoming Nether End. The starting point - the Cheney Arms - is on the right, at the junction of Nether End, Rearsby Lane and Main Street.
