Gloucester Lodge, later Royal Lodge, was built in 1780 for Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester, but was purchased by his brother, George 111, in 1801. After his death, the house was sold and in the third quarter of the century it became the Gloucester Hotel and was extended. It was damaged by fire in 1927 and during the subsequent rebuilding, another storey was added.
