Description

Start from the junction of Manchester Road and Crossings Road, Chapel-en-le-Frith.

[1]  From the 199 bus stop walk in an easterly direction along Manchester Road towards the centre of Chapel. Immediately after the pedestrian traffic lights, turn right into Long Lane, sign post to the station. (A) Look at the large model of a gypsy caravan in a garden on your right.  Walk past the leisure centre and Chapel High School, under the railway bridge, then turn first right by a green public footpath fingerpost (opposite house number 51) up a wide tarmaced lane.

[2] Pass through stone gate posts which have signs saying 'private road', though this IS a public footpath. Again pass under the railway via a long bridge, and continue along the path with trees on your left and fields on your right. There are views on the right over towards Chapel and the high school. Pass Down Lee Farm on your right and continue on uphill. Stop just before the next bridge under the railway. Take the path on the right, that goes along beside the railway lines.

[3] If coming by train, cross to the side of the track with the station buildings. Find a gate out of the station that is the continuation of the line crossings. Don't go through that gate, but instead go through a wooden kissing gate on the left and go down the path, going downhill parallel to  the railway lines. At a junction with a wider path beside a bridge under the railway, cross the wide path and carry on along beside the railway.

(B) This path has good views to the right of the path all the way along, on a clear day. The conical hill is Eccles Pike, Combs reservoir can be seen off to the left and there is a good view out over Chapel

[4] As the path approaches a farm, pass a little tunnel under the railway on the left. Continue on to the end of the path and go through a metal gate. On your right the road signs say  'private road, farm access only'. Turn left and cross over the railway. Immediately after crossing the bridge, turn right through a metal gate to continue along beside the railway, now on the opposite side. This path leads past fields and then gardens on the left, and then down to a road beside a railway bridge. (C) If you turn left here, the road goes into the lovely village of Combs , where there is a pub, The Beehive, which sells food.

[5] Turn right and go under the railway bridge, then turn immediately left through a wide wooden gate, beside a wooden footpath fingerpost. The footpath here is hard to see, but head across the field towards a derelict barn. The field can be boggy and sometimes has livestock in it. Over the stile is a lane; here turn right. Walk along the lane, with views of Combs reservoir to the left. Go over a cattle grid between a pair of gate posts with stone hare/rabbits on top. If you turn round when through the gates, you will see the sign Dane Wood on the right-hand gate post.

[6] Go past a house on your left and exit the lane onto a road.Turn slightly left and cross the road to a metal gate beside which is a small wooden gate. There is a green footpath sign by the pedestrian gate. Keep the field boundary on your right as it curves left and right  and go along this field, to a track through a gap in the hedge at the far end. Continue along with the field boundary on your right a little way into this second field, to an entrance to a field on the right. Again there is no gate, just a track through beside 2 holly bushes on your right. From the holly bushes, the path goes diagonally left across the field and exits the field just to the right of a telegraph pole.

[7] The path now goes through a piece of rough grassland, carrying on in the same direction, then curving to the right in front of a hedge. The path joins a board walk under trees, with a stile at the end. Climb over the stile, and you are on the edge of Chapel golf course. Follow the path behind a small breeze-block building, through long grass, with the field margin to the right. Follow the path to the next stile and then over a plank bridge. At the end of the bridge go up right onto the grass. Starting at an oak tree, the path goes straight across the field to the fence opposite, walking parallel with the telegraph wires to your right..

[8] Climb over the stile and back onto the golf course. When the fairway is clear, (play coming from the right) go straight ahead to a wooden bridge. Cross the bridge and turn right, and walk along beside the brook, keeping off the golf course as much as possible. Go round the edge of the golf course as it curves round left. Just before the field boundary makes a turn right, there is a stile. Climb over the stile and walk through the next field, this time with the field boundary on your left. At the end of the field, approaching some stables, there is a little wooden gate in the left-hand corner. Go through this gate and bear left to a gate with a stile beside it. Climb over the stile to a lane.

[9] If you look right, you will see (D) Marsh Hall, a lovely old farm with a circular pigeon tower in front. Turn left up the lane towards gate posts, with a sign saying 'private no footpath'. Immediately before the gate on the right is the entrance to a footpath. Go along this footpath, which goes through back gardens, then round the school playing field, to eventually exit onto Firth View by a small car park. Walk straight up Firth View, with the houses on your right, and back to the bus stops on Manchester Road and the start of the walk.
