Route Summary A short circular walk starting from County Hall and leading to the Recreation Grounds of Aykley Heads with nice views over the Durham Valley.

Getting there

Parking is available at the car park of Durham Light Infantry Museum or at Wharton Park. This route is also accessible via public transport. The starting point is a short walk from Durham's railway and bus station.

Description

[1] Turn right along the front of County Hall.

[2] At the road junction, cross the road ahead, turn left and soon turn right up the hill with the main staff car park on your right.

[3] Pass Bistro 21 on your right and turn right at the roundabout. Cross the road as the pavement stops on this side.

Take care when crossing the road.

[4] Pass Salvus on your right and the Police Headquarters on your left, and follow the road round to the right with Rivergreen building on your left.

[5] Where the road ends, bear left past a gate and then turn right onto a paved footpath through the playing fields area. Follow this path for some distance with good views of the Wear valley on your left.

[6] Continue on this path where it enters a wooded area and passes the access road into the Durham Light Infantry Museum (DLI).

[7] Continue on the footpath with the pond in front of the DLI (Durham Light Infantry Museum) on your right, and at its end follow the path the leads uphill and back to the entrance of County Hall.
