Description

[1] Starting from the Bus Stop and Car Park, enter the village by walking to the left of the Aber Falls Hotel. Pass the toilet and small exhibition building on your left and go through the gate into the village. Keep ahead and at the end of the road turn left. After the terrace of four houses on your right take the sign-posted footpath on your right.  Follow this path through a kissing gate towards (then bearing left in front of) the grey house and then over a stile. Turn right and walk with the fence on your right to eventually go through another kissing gate. Continue towards the next kissing gate, go through it to reach Henffordd. Here take the track left up the hill. Follow this track through a gate and continue up, ignoring a gate on the right, until you come to a green grassy track with gates on the left and on the right, now high above the village.

[2] Turn right to go westwards through the gate. You are now on the North Wales Path. This grass track goes past the remains of old tree stumps which was an old plantation in the shape of a cross, and may still be shown on your map. You will then encounter a gate which is usually locked so carry on through the kissing gate alongside it. At this point turn immediately left and proceed upwards with the fence on your left hand side to another fence ahead. Go through this broken fence and take the path diagonally right to head for the far right hand corner of the field. (Heading to the right of the pylon on the horizon.) Go to the right of the sheep pen to go through a gate on to the open mountain.

Follow the path directly ahead as it goes over the hill, still towards the pylon. It then drops down slightly under the three pylon lines and then goes up the slope of Moel Wnion. At the top of this slope you pass an ancient cairn on your right. The path continues ahead then curves round to the left as it meets another path coming in from the right. The path skirts to the left to go alongside the mountain. In some places it follows a deep trench possibly the remains of a leat. A path joins from the left. Continue on the well defined rising path until you reach a point where the path and the trench ends at SH 6546 7007

[3] Immediately take the very faint footpath which goes off right up hill. There is no real footpath across this section up the mountain to the summit. There are several faint paths going in your general direction. There are some significant rushes ahead, pass to the right of these to eventually reach a more distinct path and join it to proceed in a generally west south westward direction to the summit shelter around the now broken trig. point. This is the summit of Moel Wnion at 580 metres (1906 feet) and waypoint SH6497 6971. Continue along the distinct ridge path and down the other side of the mountain. At the path crossing, take the path going left. Follow this as it bends left either level or slightly downhill. Do not be tempted to take any paths going uphill and to your left to reach SH 6523 6911

[4] Continue on the level and then downhill keeping to the left of stream and deep gulley. The gulley widens out on your side of the stream and a path becomes visible alongside the stream but further down. Leave the path and go down right to join it. Keep to the path on this side of the stream until you come close to a fence. Cross over this stream to the stile on the other side. Cross the stile and bear right to follow the path over the footbridge past Rheaedr Fach falls and on to the main Aber Falls.

[5] After viewing the falls take the footpath over another footbridge to the wide graded track and turn left to go down past the Exhibition and shelter buildings to an ornate gate. Take the footpath left to cross the river and eventually to the bridge and road. Follow the road back down to the start.
