Description

[1] From the Commons, continue into Well Bank below St Mary’s Church, down Churxh Street and up onto High Street just before the traffic lights. Turn right at the lights onto Old Mill Road and cross by the Pelican Crossing. Walk along the left-hand pavement towards a roundabout. Just before the roundabout turn left off the road, dropping down to the left of a stream, and take the fieldside footpath uphill, towards the farm drive of Fields Farm, which leads to Houndings Lane.

[2] Turn left at Houndings Lane and, in about 500 metres, turn right at the junction with Hassall Road. Walk down Hassall Road for 500 metres and then take the footpath on the right beside the stream. This footpath follows the course of the stream for about 500 metres, before bending left to follow a hedge boundary to a bridge under a disused railway line. Go under the bridge, turn half right towards a house and then follow the track over the canal bridge. Turn right into Cottons Lane which leads down into Wheelock by the former Nag’s Head Inn.

[3] Turn left on the main A534 road for 200 metres to the footpath on the right through the yard of Brook Farm. The path goes through the stockyard, along a field drive and down to the river. Continue through fields, with the river on the right, to the field drive for Fields Farm. At Fields Farm take the farm drive to a lane. Turn left on the lane to a minor road where there is a footpath almost opposite. Walk south along that footpath, through fields past Poplars Farm and Claylanes Farm, to where it emerges onto Maw Lane by the farm, Clayhanger Hall.

[4] Cross the lane, and another path opposite continues south for about 1.6 Km, bending right and then left to skirt a small wood, to Bradeley Road, the access road to Bradeley Hall. Cross Bradeley Road and continue in the same direction to a stile onto the A534 Haslington by-pass. The route is now slightly complicated due to this new road. Cross the stile, turn right and walk along the right-hand embankment. Ignore a second stile in 20 metres. About 100 metres farther on there is a stile in the fence on the other side of the road, Cross to the stile and follow the path. Fork right after a short distance onto a second path. Stay on this path, ignoring a stile on the right which leads to the edge of the by-pass, and emerge onto a road opposite Crewe Green Church.

[5] Turn right along the road and walk towards Crewe past a large roundabout (following signs A534 and Crewe Railway Station). Keep to the right-hand side of the road, where there is a pavement. Continue forward at the roundabouts by the college and the fire station.

The route ends at the railway station just beyond the fire station.
