Description

[1] Upon leaving St Martin's House turn left along St Martins West and at Guildhall Lane turn left.

(A) The Guildhall was thought to have been built in the early fifteenth century and served as the Town Hall until the current Town Hall was built in 1876. It is now a museum with free entry.

[2] At the T- junction with St Nicholas Place turn right and walk straight ahead with the BBC Radio Leicester headquarters on your right and an open-air car park on your left.

[3] Walk straight across a pedestrian area at the beginning of High Street and walk into Highcross Street. In Roman times this junction was the centre of the city. Continue walking down Highcross Street. On your right is the Old Grammar School

(B) The Old Grammar School was built of stone in 1573 and after use as a school it was a warehouse. Currently it is a restaurant.

[4] Walk on Highcross Street until the traffic lights just before Highcross Shopping Centre. Cross Vaughan Way at the traffic lights and continue walking on Highcross Street

Take care crossing Vaughan Way as it is an extremely busy road.

[5] Continue down Highcross Street (not clearly signposted!) and pass All Saints Church on your right.

(C) All Saints Church is thought to have been built in about 1300, but has earlier features. It was restored in the nineteenth century. It has a picturesque clock.

[6] Continue down Highcross Street passing West End Art Gallery, a private gallery with free admission. Sanvey Gate is the second turning on the right. Cross Sanvey Gate at the traffic lights and turn right along Sanvey Gate and turn immediately left along a narrow jitty called Old Mill Lane. There is no street name at the Sanvey Gate end but there is sign post to Abbey Park pointing along the jitty.

Take care as this is a cycle path so look out for cyclists.

[7] Turn right at the end of Old Mill Lane and walk along Berkley Street. At the junction with Craven Street turn left and walk along Craven Street and immediately turn right into Friday Street walking along the upper right-hand-side pavement (not the road which goes under St Margaret's Way).

Be aware of industrial traffic as you cross these streets

[8] At St Margaret's Way turn left be careful to keep to the pedestrian half of the pavement, after about 100 metres you will go over the canal. Take the steps down to the canal on your left and at the canal turn left under the two bridges carrying the traffic of St Margaret's Way.

[9] Walk along the towpath beside the canal with the canal on your right and the car park for Abbey Park on your left. Just before Bridge no 7 (about 20 metres) go up the ramp to your left and go through the entrance into the Park. Look at the map showing all the Park attractions: boating lake, cafe, Abbey ruins, pets' corner, miniature  railway etc Point out the miniature railway which operates on Sunday afternoons from 2pm - 5pm from Easter to the end of October.

(D) Abbey Park was laid out in 1882. It contains the ruins of Leicester Abbey which Henry VIII closed in 1538 with the dissolution of the monastries.

[10] Retrace your steps to the Park entrance turn left along Abbey Walk (not signposted at this end), the path bears left then turn right and walk over the bridge.

[11]  Continue down Abbey Walk, at the junction with Friday Street turn left and immediately right down Watling Street. Turn right down Canning Street and continue into Canning Place crossing Grafton Place. Turn left down the diagonal path through St Margaret's Churchyard.  At the main door of the church turn left and walk out of the Churchyard and follow the path which goes down to the underpass which runs under Burley's Way.. Point out St Margaret's Bus Station.

The Underpass is somewhat derelict and can be intimidating, be alert!

(E) St Margaret's Church has Anglo-Saxon foundations and was built in various periods, it was restored in the 1860s

(F) St Margaret's Bus Station has long distance buses and some city buses stop here

[12]  In the underpass follow the signs for the city centre. At the end of the underpass take the steps to the right,  coming up in Churchgate point out St Margaret's Bus Station again.

[13] Walk up Churchgate a short distance and then after the Matalan car park turn right down Butt Close Lane. Walk to the T-junction and   turn left and walk down East Bond Street and look at the Great Meeting Chapel .

(G) The Great Meeting Chapel is a Unitarian church originally built in 1708. Adjacent is a large timber building that was formerly a warehouse.

[14] Continue up East Bond Street and cross  St Peter's Lane.

Take care crossing St Peter's Lane as there is no pedestrian crossing.

The road becomes New Bond Street, continue to the end and walk into the Highcross Shopping Centre. At the junction turn left and walk out of the Shopping Centre with Laura Ashley on your left, in East Gates point out the Clock Tower.

(H) The Clock Tower is regarded as the centre of the city. It was built in 1868 and the four statues are of Simon de Montfort (set up the first  English parliament), William Wyggeston, Thomas White and Alderman Newton who are all local benefactors.

[15] Turn right along East Gates and take the left hand fork along Silver Street, keep walking straight crossing Loseby Lane. This area is known as "The Lanes".
