Getting there

First Bus operate a regular service along Astill Lodge Road from Haymarket Bus Station - numbers 25 and 26.

Alight at Beaumont Lodge Primary school then walk to the shops and turn into the car park. Beaumont Lodge is the large old house on your right. The main door is through the gap on the right, signed 'Beaumont Lodge Reception'.

Description

This walk has a number of busy roads, please take care when crossing these and use pedestrian crossings where possible.

Some of the pavements and paths are uneven in places - take care.

[1]  From the car park, with your back to the doctor's surgery, turn right and walk to Astill Lodge Road. Turn left and cross the road at the pedestrian island. Take the path straight facing and continue along Churchbell Way for about 300m.

[2]  Turn left onto the path just after the metal barriers into the green space. Bear right at a path junction to follow the path onto Phillips Crescent.  Turn left then left again onto Lipton Road and at the end turn right onto Beaumont Lodge Road. Take care - the path on the right is a cycleway.

[3]  After about 100m turn right onto Parkhurst Road and after a short distance cross over and continue on the cycleway under Bennion Road.

[4]  Turn right on the path alongside Bennion Road and continue forward for 500m.

[5]  Take the footpath on the left to enter Beaumont Park. On you left is Beaumont Town FC. After a few metres cross the entrance road and continue forward to cross the road again and pass through bollards into the park proper onto a wide tarmac drive. Be careful of cyclists on the wide path.

(A) Beaumont Park has some very pleasant walks and some great views of  Bradgate Park.  There are large grassy areas and areas of woodland.  A small pond and some of the areas of ancient woodland can be accessed by tracks off the main path.

[6]  At the barrier at the end of the drive bear left onto the road and pass a building marked 'Beaumont Park Sports Pavilion' which is now the Leicester Lions Speedway Stadium.  Turn left as if you are entering the car park but immediately turn right onto the path again. Bear left around the car park. The path winds up through the park. Ignore a right turn towards Tesco.

(B) Speedway started at Leicester in 1928 and continued intermittently until 1962.  In 1968 Long Eaton Archers were moved to bring speedway back to  Leicester Stadium to form the Leicester Lions.  One of the stars was Ray Wilson who became British Champion, World Pairs Champion and a member of 4 World Cup winning teams.  Closure came in 1983 as the site was sold for redevelopment.  Fans' efforts for a return of speedway to the city was rewarded in 2011 with the opening of this new £1.2million stadium.

[7]  After about 400m or so turn left where two paths cross.  Continue to the end of the path to exit the park.

[8]  Cross Leycroft Road and turn left to continue to the end, passing the entrance to Walkers Crisp factory.

[9]  Turn right onto Bennion Road, continuing to cross at the pedestrian refuge into Astill Lodge Road to return to the centre.
