Description

[1] Leave Tegg's Nose Visitor Centre and turn right towards the road entrance on Buxton Old Road. Follow the Gritstone Trail signs turning right and walk 75 yards uphill along the side of the road. Go left onto gravel track then cross a stone wall stile immediately on your right, following Gritstone Trail signs into a field then over a wooden stile beside a metal gate. Noting the views over the Cheshire plain to your left, cross the field and go through a wooden gate. Across the next field, go through a metal gate followed by a wooden gate before climbing a stile and then start to descend. Ignoring two paths to the left and one to the right (ie, a cross roads of paths) go over one more stile into a field then through a wooden gate to carefully cross over Buxton Road. When you pass through this gate you go down a few narrow steps and emerge straight onto this road which carries numbers of HGVs - take care. Cross over to the pavement on the other side. This is still part of the Gritstone Trail.

[2] Go left down Buxton Road for 20 yards, then at the junction with Bull Hill Lane, cross right over a wooden stile and descend straight on towards a barn. To the right of the barn, cross a wooden stile. Go left and descend. Cross a wooden stile and pass over a small stream. Go uphill to a metal kissing gate, then through a field to cross over a wooden stile. Carry on left to reach a stile to cross and arrive at a tarmac lane.

[3] At this point leave the Gritstone Trail, turning immediately right going towards Hordern Farm. Pass through farm houses and where the lane bears right downhill go left (in effect you are going straight on) to a metal kissing gate. Follow the grassy track to a wooden gate, with a stile on the right hand side towards Gulshaw Hollow. Follow the path straight ahead as it contours along the hillside and eventually dips down to the hollow. At the bottom of the hollow, cross a wooden stile turn right and ascend the path to a concrete road, going uphill (ie, right) towards the house and eventually reach Walker Barn.

[4] Go left and carefully cross the road. At the junction go right into Crooked Yard Road, following this road steeply downhill for half a mile or more until turning right onto the 'Concessionary Bridleway', and return up the cobblestone path "Tegg's Nose Trail" to the Visitor Centre. As an alternative, return from Walker Barn to the Visitor Centre via Buxton Old Road (taking care of traffic). Walking time on this alternative route is approximately 10 mins.
