Description

This walk entails two steep uphill climbs and one (longer) steep downhill climb. It could also involve walking on a narrow road with no footpath for a short distance.

There are some grassy areas that can be slippery when wet.

[1] Turn left after you come out of St David's church and cross Shenley Lane using the pedestrian lights. Turn right and walk uphill, passing Long Mynd Road on your left.

[2] Just before the junction of Shenley Lane and Shenley Hill, turn left onto an area of grass, if conditions are not too wet. (If the ground is wet, follow Shenley Hill as far as Merritt's Hill.) There are some excellent views from the grassy area.

Note the 'trig point' in the hedge on your right. A trig point is more correctly called a 'triangulation pillar' and such triangulation pillars were used by the Ordnance Survey to produce its maps by means of theodolite bearings. Trig points are now redundant, for today the Ordnance Survey uses aerial surveying combined with satellite imaging.

[3] Where the path reaches the road, cross over, turn right and enter Ley Park. Inside the Park, turn left and follow the path steeply downhill, taking the left fork where the path divides. At the bottom, come out through an ‘official’ gap in the hedge, cross over the road and enter the grassy area, initially on a tarmac path.

If conditions are wet, turn left when you come out in Merritts Hill. Follow Merritt's Hill steeply downhill, passing Long Mynd Road on your left. Take the raised pavement when you reach it, walk over a grassy area, and take a footpath right that comes out on the road. Beware if traffic here, because the road is narrow and without a footpath and cars sometimes travel more quickly than they ought to. Pass Clun Road, Meadow Brook Road and Brookside on your left. After Brookside, turn left onto a tarmac path, then continue as from point 5.

[4] Leave the tarmac path after about 10 yards and take an earth path. (If conditions are too wet and/or muddy here, turn back and go into Meadow Brook Road and follow it as far as Spiceland Road.)

[5] Follow the earth path until its end in Shenley Lane. Turn left in Shenley Lane and left again into Meadow Brook Road and walk as far as Spiceland Road. Turn right into Spiceland Road and walk steeply uphill and, just before the road curves around to the left, take a service road on your right. Follow it as it curves round and comes out in Shenley Lane. This you cross my means of the pedestrian lights and then make your way back to St David's church ahead of you.
