Starting from 722 Prince of Wales Road, Darnall, Sheffield
[1] Cross Prince of Wales Road at the lights, turn left then right into Poole Road. Take the last road on the left, Colister Drive, and turn right into the cul de sac. Continue through the walkway and the green A-frame opposite and turn right 20yds beyond the last bungalow. Follow the concrete path round to the left after 100yds, turn right on a natural path then left onto the mown grass before reaching the road.
[2] Follow the right-hand inside edge around this greenspace, known as Acres Hill (A). As you double back and climb a reasonable view unfolds, with Keppel’s Column the most notable landmark. on a 400ft.hill beyond the Motorway. Keppel`s Column is one of 3 follies built on the estate of Wentworth, on the edge of Rotherham in the 18th Century. It was commisioned in 1778 by Charles Watson Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham and designed by John Carr, a well-known architect of the time.It was built to commerorate the acquittal at court martial of Admiral Augustus Keppel after losing the Battle of Ushant against the French..It has an internal spiral staircase but is not in a good state of repair so is not open to the public. It can be seen close to from a public footpath in that area. Turn the corner and keep to the edge. At the seat, turn left along the tarmac path, pass through the A-frame and turn left on Halsall Avenue.
[3] Turn right at the junction then second left into Halsall Road to return to 722.
