Getting there

Southern Grove Resource Centre is a short distance from Mile End Road Underground Station. On leaving the station turn left on to Mile End Road and continue along to Eric Street. Turn left and walk to the end and Hamlets Way. Turn left here and continue to Southern Grove where you turn left. The Resource Centre is a short way along on the right.

Description

[1] Come out of the Resource Centre and turn right along Southern Grove. Follow Southern Grove to the busy Mile End Road, heading to the right to cross  at the pedestrian lights. Once across, head back left along the Mile End Road and turn right into Cavendish Terrace. Turn next right into Tredegar Square (closes half an hour before dusk), walking through the middle of the square. Once out of the gardens turn right along Morgan Street. At the crossroads turn left along Coborn Road. Pass under the railway bridge and almost immediately afterwards cross the road to turn right into Tredegar Road.

Wheelchair users may have to continue to find a drop kerb and then double back to Tredegar Road.  They will then be on the left hand side of Tredegar Road and so should ignore the instructions about the zebra crossing as they will be able to turn right into St Steven Road and use the zebra crossing there to continue along the right hand side of the road.

Cross the end of Balmer Road and then use the zebra crossing to cross Tredegar Road. Go back along Tredegar Road and almost immediately turn right into St Stephen’s Road

[2] Walk along the right hand side of St Stephen’s Road, crossing several side streets including the busy Roman Road. When you get to the junction with Old Ford Road, bear to the right and cross Old Ford Road at the zebra crossing. Go straight ahead into Gunmaker’s Lane. Cross over the Hertford Union Canal, and then turn off the bridge and onto the canal tow path to go left along the canal.

(A) The Hertford Union Canal or Duckett's Canal opened in 1830 and is a short stretch of about 1.5 km of canal connecting the Regent's Canal to the Lee Navigation. It was supposed to provide a short-cut avoiding the tidal, tortuous and often silted Bow Back Rivers of the River Lea but it was but quickly proved to be a commercial failure. It was acquired by the Regents Canal Company in 1857, and became part of the Grand Union Canal in 1927.

An alternative route that may be more suitable for wheelchairs or wider pushchairs can be found by heading into Victoria Park and following the path that runs almost parallel to the canal. At the Crown Gate exit, head into the western part of Victoria Park before exiting onto the Regent’s Canal shortly afterwards through a gate on your left.

Turn left along the canal.

[3] Keep the canal on your left as you walk along. Continue along the towpath, under two bridges (Skew and Grove Road). When you reach the end, pass through the metal barriers and head uphill.  Turn left at the top, through the barriers and down the brick slope to join the towpath of the Regent’s Canal.  Continue past the entrances to Mile End Park on your left, passing under Roman Road.

[4] Pass under a pedestrian bridge and then a railway bridge and head left into the Art Pavilion section of Mile End Park. Follow the right hand path uphill and over the pavilion, and then as you come back down follow the path to the right of a large grassy mound. Follow the same path as it swings back to the right, crossing Mile End Road on the specially designed Green Bridge. Follow the path downhill until you reach a large junction next to the Regent’s Canal towpath. Turn sharp left here, walking away from the canal and towards Burdett Road.  Cross Burdett Road using the double zebra crossing and continue straight ahead along Hamlets Way. At the end of Hamlets Way turn right to return to the centre on Southern Grove.
